During the course of last night a fire broke out at a digs on Milner Street.

Five of the six male students were able to escape the fire unharmed. The body of the last member of the digs, a student in his twenties from Durban, was found by firefighters in the remains of the house.

Catherine Deiner, Media Relations Officer of Rhodes University, has confirmed the death, and states that the university are waiting for the arrival of the student’s parents before they release an official statement.

An inquest docket has been opened by the police, and police forensic experts are arriving from PE shortly to investigate the cause of the fire that burnt to the extent of destroying the entire roof of the house.

The five other students that escaped the fire are unharmed, and are currently receiving counselling from the Rhodes University Counselling Centre.
