Test week is coming up, in the distance you can see exams approaching and that mid-afternoon urge to take a nap still won’t go away. So here are some tried and tested (although peculiar) ways to get some instant energy when you need some.
1. Have some water
Whether you drink it, wash your face with it, or throw it over your head, the cool refreshing nature of it is sure to wake you up and keep you focused.
2. Grab that Green tea
Bit of a caffeine addict? Consider trading in your morning cup of coffee for a mug of green tea. Though still containing caffeine, this is a far healthier and more natural alternative (plus, the fact that it promotes healthy weight loss and general well-being is an added win — you’re welcome!)
3. Take a nap
Yes, I know we said we want to combat the sleep-monster, but conducive research has shown that taking a 10-minute power nap helps reset your brain and boost your energy levels (just be sure to set an alarm so it doesn’t turn into an all-day affair).
4. Sniff a cinnamon stick
Some say that just a whiff of this scented spice can diminish fatigue and help them feel more alert (personally I’m dubious — but don’t knock it till you try it!).
5. Let the sun shine in
Open the window and invite in the sun. The light, fresh air or simply just a beautiful natural view can help boost alertness. Alternatively, head outside to soak up some sun and collect some vitamin D in the process.
6. Work it out
Quick bursts of exercise get your heart rate pumping and lift your energy levels instantly. Feel like you’re dozing off whilst studying? Do 100 jumping jacks, run up and down the stairs in your apartment or skip rope for a minute.
7. Eat an apple
Your brain needs fuel to function. Crunching on an apple for a few minutes will help to wake you up whilst all the good nutrients will also give your body that much-needed extra boost.
8. See red
Greatist.com suggests that studies have shown the colour red is associated with winning and self-confidence. They suggest that you try looking at some red or violet hues (or wearing them) to feel more awake. A bit of a weird one, but if you’re desperate it won’t hurt.
9. Straighten up
Slouching behind a desk only makes you feel sleepy. Sit up straight, stretch it out, do some yoga or take a little walk around your desk to perk up.
10. Drop the energy drinks
Red Bull is not the answer to your problems. Avoid sugary energy drinks, as they can have you crashing as soon as an hour after drinking them. Even mild dehydration promotes fatigue, so ensuring that you drink lots of liquids is essential.
11. Blink more
Next time you’re fighting off the urge to doze off at your desk, Dr. Douglas N. Graham suggests that you try blinking more. ‘When reading, viewing the computer, or otherwise engaged, blink 10 to 20 times per minute. Your brain takes a mini-vacation with each blink.’
So next time you’re in need of some instant energy, or just a change from the dull monotony of library studying, pick a strange energy booster and give it a try!
