{"id":3487,"date":"2017-04-11T16:23:05","date_gmt":"2017-04-11T14:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentnewsgrid.com\/?p=3487"},"modified":"2017-04-11T16:23:05","modified_gmt":"2017-04-11T14:23:05","slug":"wits-students-suspended-assaulting-lecturer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentnews.africa\/sng\/2017\/04\/11\/wits-students-suspended-assaulting-lecturer\/","title":{"rendered":"Wits students suspended after assaulting lecturer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two students at the University of the Witswatersrand (Wits)\u00a0have been suspended after assaulting a lecturer and damaging university property.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nOne of the students, Mangaliso Sambo was arrested and will appear in Hillbrow Magistrate\u2019s court tomorrow. Sambo appeared in court yesterday but the matter was postponed.<\/p>\n<p>Last week Thursday the two students allegedly demanded that they be let into a meeting held by the Wits School of Education\u2019s executive committee. The meeting took place at the Parktown campus. The two students are members of the Education Students\u2019 Council, however they were not allowed to be at this meeting.<\/p>\n<p>When the students tried to enter the meeting, some members of staff tried to stop them by asking them to leave. Allegedly this was when Sambo attacked a staff member\u00a0and at which point security removed the two students.<\/p>\n<p>Allegedly the students returned later on, they attacked another staff member, broke windows and turned furniture over in the campus control office. The staff member and campus control manager were taken to Milpark Hospital and discharged later that night.<\/p>\n<p>Wits\u00a0spokesperson Shirona Patel told <a href=\"http:\/\/ewn.co.za\/2017\/04\/11\/wits-duo-suspended-for-assaulting-lecturer-damaging-property\"><i>EWN<\/i><\/a>\u00a0that \u201cThe university will not tolerate any form of physical abuse against any members of the Wits community.
