{"id":3527,"date":"2017-04-20T09:01:51","date_gmt":"2017-04-20T07:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentnewsgrid.com\/?p=3527"},"modified":"2017-04-20T09:01:51","modified_gmt":"2017-04-20T07:01:51","slug":"former-banyana-captain-nthabeleng-modiko-boost-wits-ladies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentnews.africa\/sng\/2017\/04\/20\/former-banyana-captain-nthabeleng-modiko-boost-wits-ladies\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Banyana captain Nthabeleng Modiko to boost Wits Ladies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newly appointed Wits Ladies soccer team coach, Nthabeleng Modiko, plans to improve the team&#8217;s game-play.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Nthabeleng Modiko, former-captain of the South African women\u2019s national football side, Banyana Banyana, plans to see the struggling Wits Ladies soccer team in the top four of the league for their upcoming season.<\/p>\n<p>The side has been struggling for form in recent months, however, Wits Sport has provided support for the team in terms of, \u201ca fitness coach, sports scientists and biokineticists, in order to ensure the girls are fit, so that my part, the tactical part is covered on the pitch\u201d, says Modiko.<\/p>\n<p>According to team captain Thabelo Mammuburu, who has been playing for the side since 2010, Modiko\u2019s coaching style differs from previous coaches as she monitors the teams well-being both on and off the field. She also brings about an intense approach to training, as \u201cshe constantly reminds us to be aggressive and to dominate the pitch\u201d, says Mammuburu.<\/p>\n<p>The morale in the team is high at the moment and according to Modiko, \u201cwe are not looking to just take part, but we want to stamp our authority\u201d in the coming season. This will be achieved by finishing top four in the league and making it to the quarter finals of the University Sports South Africa tournament in July.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wits Sports senior manager Michael Dick, Modiko was recruited last month in an attempt to \u201clift the profile of women&#8217;s soccer at the University\u201d after the previous coach Jabulile Baloyi moved to the University of Johannesburg. \u201cIt is definitely a strategy we decided on, to try and appoint high profile coaches who have some credit in the sport and that people know outside of university circles,\u201d says Dick.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3532\" style=\"width: 690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3532\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3532\" src=\"http:\/\/studentnewsgrid.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/01_LadySoccerTeam1-600x373.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"423\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Modiko provides fast-paced, intense coaching.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Modiko echoed this goal, stating that her long-term plans are to see Wits University being a hub for women&#8217;s soccer, \u201cwhere it will be a feeder for the national team, or even to provide good players for overseas teams\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The team has played two friendlies this year against Mito Stars Ladies FC and UJ Ladies second team, with a 2-1 win over UJ thus far.
