{"id":5022,"date":"2017-11-16T15:39:20","date_gmt":"2017-11-16T13:39:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentnewsgrid.com\/?p=5022"},"modified":"2017-11-16T15:39:20","modified_gmt":"2017-11-16T13:39:20","slug":"law-programmes-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentnews.africa\/sng\/2017\/11\/16\/law-programmes-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"Law programmes under threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/SouthAfrica\/News\/uct-among-3-sa-universities-that-may-have-to-stop-offering-law-degrees-20171116\">News24 report <\/a>today, the Council of Higher Education (CHE) has released a statement\u00a0naming\u00a0the University of Limpopo, the University of Zululand and the University of Cape Town (UCT) \u2013 one of the world&#8217;s top 100 law schools \u2013 as three universities in danger of having\u00a0their law qualification accreditation withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Walter Sisulu University&#8217;s (WSU) law qualification has already been withdrawn. Without the CHE degree accreditation, a university cannot legally offer a qualification. This\u00a0is the first time that the\u00a0council has conducted an overview of LLB programmes, since it was established in terms of the Higher Education Act of 1998.\u00a0The institutions have until May 2018 to respond to the concerns raised by the council.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uct.ac.za\/images\/userfiles\/downloads\/media\/2017-11-15_VCLawCHE_Response15Nov17.pdf\">statement<\/a> released by the\u00a0University of Cape Town says &#8220;UCT Law Faculty is surprised and concerned by the outcome of the National Review of the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme. As the top law school in South Africa, we note that our graduates are in high demand from law firms across the country, and the findings are at odds with the performance of our graduates.
