Over the last few days, Melania Trump\u2019s name and face have been the focus of scathingly funny memes and YouTube video\u2019s across the world. This follows Trump\u2019s speech on July 18 at the Republican National Convention for which she has been accused of plagiarising one of Michelle Obama\u2019s speeches.<\/p>\n

Melania, the wife of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has been slated in the media for allegedly pilfering phrases and statements from Michelle Obama\u2019s 2008 address at the Democratic National Convention. In an interview the following day on CNN, Trump\u2019s campaign manager Paul Manafort vehemently denied the allegations of plagiarism. However shortly after his interview Meredith McIver, an in-house writer at the Trump organisation, released a statement claiming responsibility for the content of the speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the phone she [Melania Trump] read me some passages of Mrs Obama\u2019s speech, I wrote them down and included them in the draft that later became the final speech. I did not check Mrs Obama\u2019s speeches. This is my mistake. I feel terrible for the pain I have caused Melania, the Trump\u2019s and Mrs Obama. No harm was meant.\u201d said McIver. McIver then went on to mention that her attempt to resign was rebuffed by Trump who, according to McIver, understood that this was a mistake and encouraged her to learn from it.<\/p>\n

Despite McIver\u2019s public apology, Trump\u2019s campaign has suffered a great setback. Public scrutiny and ridicule were intensified. Internal finger-pointing among campaign members delayed a resolution by 36 hours, hours that cost Trump\u2019s campaign dearly. Hours that allowed comic Youtubers and meme-makers all over the world to savagely reduce the incident to the funniest news event of the week. Trump himself also appeared to find the brighter side of the episode when he tweeted, \u201cGood news is Melania\u2019s speech got more publicity than any in the history of politics especially if you believe that all press is good press.\u201d<\/p>\n
