The fifth round of the competition saw three wins and a draw as teams went head to head around the country.

CUT 35 – Shimlas 14
CUT outplayed Shimlas to win a titanic battle at Shimla Park and claim back-to-back wins over their neighbours, last night. The first points were scored within the first five minutes which put CUT ahead 10-0. Shimlas did find their feet and went tit for tat with CUT as both teams continued scoring and ended the first half 19-14, in favour of the Ixias.

Maties 13 – Tuks 7
It seemed more like a wrestling bout than a rugby match at some stages but Maties held their nerve to beat Tuks in Stellenbosch. Penalties, physical confrontations and a nasty clash that ended in concussion for one Tuks player were the order of the match. In the end, Maties managed to keep the log-leaders at bay and secured their second victory of the tournament.

Wits 10 – Ikeys 10
In Round 5 of the FNB Varsity Cup, UCT returned to the Green Mile to host their northern rivals, Wits. The visitors did well to hold on to possession, which led to them scoring first. Ikeys fought back and were in the lead at half time. The home side continued to dominate both territory and possession as Wits pushed hard and the game ended in a draw as both sides remain undefeated in the competition.

NWU 19 – UJ 6
NWU got back to winning ways at the Fanie du Toit Stadium in Potchefstroom. The Eagles kicked off their second home fixture with an early 7-0 lead. UJ’s PW Steenkamp slotted a penalty to make it 7-3 after ten minutes of play and give the bottom-of-the-log team hope. The Orange Army continued their pursuit for points in the second half, but NWU’s defence forced handling errors and left them with no way through.
