In Dhaka, Bangladesh, 20 students at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology were on Wednesday sentenced to death for the murder of Abrar Fahad in October 2019.
Ruling on the controversial case that sparked campus protests, the court also awarded life-term jail sentences to five others.
Bangladesh’s Dhaka Tribune reported that Abrar’s father Md Barkat Ullah said he hoped that the High Court would uphold the judgement and the authorities would execute it soon. “Abrar’s soul will be at peace if the verdict is enforced quickly.”
News agency AFP reported that Fahad had been killed hours after posting a viral video in which he had criticised Bangladesh’s prime minister.
