Rape riots close Kenya’s Maseno university
Maseno University has been closed indefinitely following riots by students over alleged rape cases on and off campus.
In a statement on Sunday evening, Vice-Chancellor Prof Julius Nyabundi said students had failed to engage university management in structured discussions over the rape allegations and the university will be closed until further notice.
Student Organisation of Maseno University Secretary-General Alex Kalugho told Nation the students rioted after two of their colleagues were raped on Saturday night.

Precious Ramabulana murder suspect appears in court
The suspect arrested for the murder of Capricorn TVET college student Precious Ramabulana appeared in Morebeng magistrate court yesterday and was remanded in custody until 30 January 2020.
The accused, aged 28, is facing charges of murder, housebreaking with intent to rape and rape as well as aggravated robbery, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo confirmed to SNG this morning, adding that the suspect cannot be named as he has not yet pleaded.
The suspect was arrested for the murder last week, just days after the murder took place in the early hours of Sunday morning (November 24). The business management student was attacked and raped in her off campus accommodation before being stabbed to death.
Independent probe clears SU rector of interference in ConCourt language policy case:
The independent investigation by retired Judge Burton Fourie has been concluded and the Stellenbosch University (SU) Council yesterday afternoon (2 December 2019) accepted his report.
Speaking in a video posted to YouTube, Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers reacted as follows: “I have been completely exonerated. The investigation found that I had not attempted to influence the Constitutional Court ruling in the Stellenbosch University Language Policy case when I approached Justice Edwin Cameron to be nominated for election as Chancellor. It was indeed my responsibility as head of the University to help find the best possible candidates for this senior position.
