Back to the future

On 21 February, the university hosted an on campus activation at the piazza, on UP’s main campus in Hatfield. The purpose of the event was to allow students to familiarise themselves with student life and get to know the different structures within the UP community. It was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tawana Kupe and a large number of registered UP students including first year students. Sibahle Mhlongo, a first-year student who attended the event, said it was very informative and eye opening.

Since the emergence of the pandemic, all important events in the UP calendar have had to take place virtually. However, now with a significant number of students fully vaccinated or partially vaccinated Prof. Kupe is proud to welcome new students into the university space as well as returning students who may need assistance from the services offered at the university.

As much as vaccinations are still encouraged by UP, students have been assured by Prof. Kupe that vaccinations are
not compulsory for them to utilise services offered by the university. “The university has maintained its ranking and will continue to do so in and out of class as well as to prepare its graduates for the workplace”, said Prof. Kupe. “More and more students will be going to campus as from the day of the activation as well as more events will be taking place such as
the marketing week’, continued SRC President Thuto Mashilo.

According to Prof. Kupe and SRC President Mashilo this is worth celebrating and they thank all students for cooperating throughout online learning activities.
