The 2026 FNB Varsity Football Women tournament got off to an exciting start this weekend, with eight universities in action and a series of tightly contested matches showcasing the growing quality and competitiveness of women’s university football in South Africa.
Round 1
The 2026 tournament kicked off on Saturday at the University of Pretoria. The opening day produced closely contested encounters as WSU and Wits played to a 1-1 draw, while newcomers UL marked their return with a goalless draw against CPUT. The UJ Orange Army were the only side to claim maximum points after edging TUT 1-0 in a repeat of last year’s semi-final, while hosts UP-Tuks were held to a 0-0 draw by defending champions UWC in the day’s marquee clash.

Round Two of the 2026 Varsity Football Women tournament burst into life at the University of Pretoria on Sunday, producing 20 goals after just three were scored on the opening day. TUT delivered the biggest result with an emphatic 11-1 victory over CPUT, while UJ made it two wins from two after beating hosts UP-Tuks 3-0. Wits secured a 2-1 win over newcomers UL, while defending champions UWC were held to a 1-1 draw by WSU and remain without a victory.
